Universal Studios has released the first trailer of its new production, Mary Magdalene, an intimate epic about one of Jesus' most well-known disciples.

Produced in the United Kingdom, the film features the direction of Garth Davis, who received the Directors Guild of America award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement of a First-Time Feature Film Director for his work on the film “Lion”.

ROONEY MARA AND JOAQUIN PHOENIX

David has casted his “Lion” supporting actress Rooney Mara in the title role opposite Joaquin Phoenix as Jesus, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Tahar Rahim.

The majority of “Mary Magdalene” was shot in rural Italy, which has become Hollywood’s go-to destination for religious period epics.

According to the trailer, the film tries to show “the untold story” of Mary Magdalene and Jesus Christ, her presence among the disciples, and the conflicts that this will produce in the midst of a society where women had no relevance.

RELEASE IN MARCH 2018

The film was originally set for release in November 2017 but was bumped to March 2018 in order to coincide with Easter.
