Malta approves same-sex marriage
The words “father” and “mother” are replaced by “parent who gave birth” and “parent who did not give birth”. Government and opposition voted together.

Only one of the 67 members of the Malta parliament voted against the legalisation of same-sex marriage.
Both the government led by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and almos all of the oposition supported the new law, in a country whith a clear Roman Catholic majority.
Muscar said the “historic” vote showed that “our society are maturing…it’s a society where we can all say we are equal”. The Prime Minister won the national election on June 3.
The words “husband”, “wife”, “mother” and “father” will be removed from the Marriage Act with the new law. They will be replaced with gender-neutral “spouse”, “parent who gave birth” and “parent who did not give birth”.
Malta becomes the 24th country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage, the 14th in Europe.
Only two weeks ago, Germany also voted for the legalisation of gay marriage.
