A North Texas couple who married on Jan. 16 lost their home and almost everything inside after a fire tore through their apartment building in Irving Saturday.

After sorting through their damaged apartment, Chris Lewis and his wife, Brittni, found their Bible and marriage license had been spared by a fire that destroyed most of their possessions.

The Bible's cover was slightly damaged, but the pages inside were untouched.

The marriage license wasn't burnt either.

"It's something that I'll always cherish and it will always remind me of the two most important things in my life, which is my wife and God," Lewis said. "The only thing we keep telling ourselves is that it happened for a reason. What's next for us is finding what that reason is."

Surrounding apartment units suffered smoke damage. Nobody was injured in the fire and the cause is under investigation.
