There are players whose story is closely linked to the very history of the NBA. One of these is BILL RUSSELL, perhaps one of the five best basketball players of all times. When Bill started to play in McClaymond's College there were people who played much better than he did. In the college there were 15 match shirts and he was player number 16. The only way he could play for a few minutes was when player number 15 pulled out of the game, taking off his shirt and handing it to Bill.

Bill spent quite some time playing in someone else's sweaty shirt, but he knew where he would end up. He was going to be the best.

There are few people in the world who know where they are going. They do know, perhaps, what they are doing: they know their work, or that they have to study; they know where they are at any one time... but very little more. If you ask what the objective of life is, the vast majority will not know how to respond. And neither do they say anything if asked what happens after death! Allow me to ask a personal question: do you know where you are going? Do you know your destiny?

People who are totally unworried about what could happen often say, "We will see what happens when we get there; right now I'm not at all concerned." What these people don't realise is that after death there are only two destinies: eternal life or eternal condemnation. By not making a decision now, it automatically means condemnation because they are rejecting God's loving offer, the gift of eternal life.

Would you get on a train without knowing where it was going? Would you spend all your life travelling on that train? It seems ridiculous just thinking about it... However, how many people live their whole lives without knowing their destiny? How many carry on as if nothing will happen, while all the time they are nearing their own end?

Jesus of Nazareth, the only one capable of overcoming death, said, "I am the way". No-one can have eternal life unless they follow this unique way. No-one can really know where they are going if Jesus does not go with them.

One moment please - we have not finished yet! It is possible that you do know your eternal destiny, but you have doubts about what you should do, how you should spend your life... remember that the 'way' is the same. God shows us the way through his word, so that we know how to live our lives, and to give purpose to what we do. If you have doubts about what tomorrow may bring, pray to God, talk to him about your doubts and ask him to show you what decisions to take. Ask God for wisdom, as you read his word, to understand what he is saying to you, and allow him to take control of your circumstances and personal relationships so that your life falls into line with his will.
