“There is great richness and diversity among Evangelicals, which needs to be celebrated and not only be a cause for concern”.

From January 13 to 20, the European Evangelical Alliance invites Christians and churches throughout Europe to dedicate a special time to pray.

For more than 150 years, the Evangelical Alliances have celebrated the Week of Prayer in many countries. Its aim is to bring together as many evangelical Christians as possible in every city or region.

Many local churches in Europe take this week of prayer as an opportunity to organise joint prayer meetings, to worship, thanking God and and bringing together their needs to Him.

“UNITY IN DIVERSITY”

The Evangelical Alliance of Portugal has developed the materials for the Week of Prayer 2019.

The theme of the 2019 Prayer Week is “Unity in diversity”, and all the materials have been developed by the Spanish and Portuguese Evangelical Alliances.

“During the present week of united prayer, we will see how, within diversity, there is Unity in the Church of Christ. Ephesians chapter 4 helps us to understand our common ground as a church”, said Israel Montes, coordinator of the materials.

Throughout the Week of Prayer, participants will recall eight truths that give us unity as the Church of Christ: unity in love, the Spirit, faith (creed), baptism, one body, mission, vision, and Christ.

“Each day material contains a biblical devotion, and a prayer point for thanksgiving, confession and supplication”, the EEA explains.

“DIVERSITY MEANS BEING MADE RICH AS A UNITED BODY IN CHRIST”

“There is great richness and diversity among Evangelicals, which needs to be celebrated and not only be a cause for concern”, Thomas Bucher, General Secretary of the EEA pointed out.

According to Bucher, “God has made diversity and rejoices when his body expresses this in unity […] God has blessed us with a wide range of ways to worship Him. Let this week of prayer be the opportunity to celebrate this”.

“Let this week of prayer be the spring board to make unity visible in our communities and show the world that diversity means being made rich as a united body in Christ”, he added.

The General Secretary of the EEA called Christians to pray “that we will discover the vast richness of diversity in ways which will build and add to our unity as never before”.

The Spanish Evangelical Alliance has created this year materials.

For the second year in a row, the Week of Prayer has a special Bible plan on the mobile phone app YouVersion (English).
