Military plane crash in Algeria: 257 dead

More than 100 military personnel were on board the plane. It crashed in the province of Blida, near capital Algiers.

An Algerian military plane crash near an airport in the region of Blida, near the capital Algiers has killed 247 passengers and 10 crew, the Ministry of National Defence has confirmed, according to Euronews.

More than 100 military personnel were on board the plane when it came down near Boufarik airport, local channel Ennahar TV reported. Among the passengers were families of army personel, according to the defence ministry.

Television footage showed black smoke billowing near a motorway.

It is not yet clear what caused the crash. It is the second-deadliest plane crash since 2003.
