Modern version of Job story to be made into film

A new film based on the biblical Old Testament story of Job is set to begin shooting in 2026.

Job will star Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Walton Goggins (Fallout), and Best leading actress Oscar winner for La Vie en Rose, Marion Cotillard. It is written and directed by Israeli director, Yuval Adler.

It tells the story of an actress and actor couple, who are planning to stage an ambitious theatrical production of Job’s story, only to find their own relationship unraveling under the emotional and philosophical weight of the project.

The film will move back and forth between different time periods, “juxtaposing the ancient wager between God and Satan, with the breakdown of a marriage in the present day”, says an initial synopsis of the film.

“As their private lives bleed into their performance, a confrontation on set raises an unexpected question: Who gets to play God?”, it adds.

In an interview with Variety magazine, Yuval Adler explains that he wants “the film to feel timeless yet urgent, just like the Book of Job itself”.

According to the director, “Marion and Walton will elevate this story beyond anything I could have imagined on the page”.

The film does not yet have a confirmed production start date or release window, as Goggins' schedule may be tied up with future seasons of the series Fallout.

The story of Job is found in the Old Testament and addresses the impact of suffering on humans and the questions humans have about the role of God in the midst of a world with illness, death and despair. 

The Book of Job has also inspired other major cinematic productions in the last years. One exmaple is The Tree of Life, directed by Terrence Malick and played by Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain and Sean Penn.
