In 1999 the United Nations General Assembly designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to raise public awareness of this serious problem.
Last Saturday November 25, around 150 evangelicals gathered at the Puerta del Sol in Madrid, Spain, to denounce this great scourge of our society, in an event organized by the Union of Evangelical Women (UDME in Spanish) and the Women's Office of the Evangelical Council of Madrid (CEM), with the collaboration of many associations and entities.
UNITED AGAINST VIOLENCE
Afterwards, the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Madrid, Félix González, shared a small biblical message.
Additionally, a large number of violet balloons were released, in honor of the victims, as well as white balloons, which express the hope that many women will be able to achieve a life of peace and a dignified future.
"THE BIBLE CONDEMNS MALE CHAUVINISM"
According to Asun Quintana, "we do acts like these to raise awareness of the serious problem of the violence agaisnt women".
"The Bible condemns male chauvinism. God created us with equal capacities, liberties and responsibilities. Jesus broke the rules of the time, and faced politicians and religious leaders to favor and dignify women. He is our example".
"LIKE THE DROP OF WATER THAT PIERCES THE STONE"
With acts like this "we want to be like that drop of water that pierces the rock. Not violently, but with the constancy and perseverance of the drop of water, to break the harshness of a sexsist society", says Quintana.
"Not looking the other way, but denouncing and condemning. We want our testimony to be clear and strong, as it was Jesus'. We will continue to denounce", she concludes.
