Serbia: Tabloid readers get to read the whole Bible in 2 months

A tabloid newspaper has contributed  to the spread of God’s Word in Serbia. The Bible Society in Belgrade, made a deal with the paper ‘Alo’ to enclose a Bible booklet once a week. After two months, the readers almost had the whole Bible – and only for the price of eight issues of the newspaper

As the German Bible Society (Stuttgart) related in the magazine ‘Bible Report’, the project became a great success: almost one million Bible booklets were distributed. There was also a noticeable rise in ‘Alo’’s sales figures. According to Vera Mitic of the Serbian Bible Society, “we have become far better known through the project with ‘Alo’.”

“Many people, regardless of whether they are young or old, really wanted to have our Bible booklets. This shows that the demand for Bibles is really big.”

In the near future, the Bible Society wants to enclose a prayer book with ‘Alo’. Of the 7.2 million inhabitants of Serbia, roughly 80 per cent are Christians, 16 per cent Muslims and 4 per cent non-religious. 74 per cent of the population are members of the Orthodox church, 5 per cent Catholics and just 2 per cent are Protestants.
