Holy Spirit Church, a free evangelical church Bramstedt (Cuxhaven), which has a congregation speaking both in Korean and German, saw its temple destroyed by a fire on Saturday 19 August.

A neighbour alerted the police on 1am about the smoke emerging from within the building but when the fire brigades arrived the whole building, a former commercial building used by the Korean-German church, was already in flames.

According to local media, when the first fire brigades arrived, the roof of the complex building was already in full blaze, and firefighting was only possible using heavy breathing apparatus. Over 100 emergency personnel (including volunteers) worked to extinguish the flames.

At the scene of the fire, there was heavy smoke development and the 64-year-old pastor of the church congregation, Hwa Kyoung Kim, was slightly injured by smoke gas and treated by the ambulance service.

According to a statement of the Cuxhaven region police, “the building burnt out completely” causing an “estimated property damage of over 200,000 euros”. The site was sealed off by the police.

On Monday 21 August, local media said the police investigation had been completed but no findings had been made public by then.
