On the night of 31 October, while many were celebrating Halloween, more than 1,000 young people from Madrid and various other provinces in Spain gathered with a purpose: to bring the light of the gospel to the streets of the capital.

Organised by the youth movement Lumen Fest, the gathering began at 6 p.m. and lasted until 11 p.m. The participants divided into groups to evangelise in iconic locations such as Callao, Puerta del Sol, Chueca, Plaza Mayor and Plaza de España, sharing the message of God's love with hundreds of people. At 8:00 pm, all the groups gathered in Plaza de España to proclaim the gospel together and praise God in a display of unity and faith.

The result was that, according to the organisers, 23 people expressed a decision to give their lives to Jesus during the day.

The origin of the name ‘Lumen’

According to the organisers, the name Lumen refers to different ideas. First, it is a word that comes from Latin and means ‘light’. It represents the desire to be light in the midst of darkness, reflecting Jesus’ message: You are the light of the world”.

In addition, the term lumen also has deep symbolism in other fields. In lighting, the lumen is the unit of measurement of luminous flux, which indicates the total amount of light emitted by a source. The higher the number of lumens, the more intense and visible the light. Meanwhile, in biology and anatomy, the lumen is the internal space or channel of an organ or structure, such as the lumen of a blood vessel, intestine, or cell duct, through which life flows.

Lumen Fest brings these meanings together to express its vision: “A generation that radiates the light of Christ and lets its life flow in the midst of society”. They say they are inspired by the biblical text of 2 Corinthians 4:6: “For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness’, made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ”.

Unity and evangelism

They are young evangelical Christians in Spain, an interdenominational movement, whose goal is to train young people in evangelism, and bring the message of the gospel to the streets of Madrid, with the vision of expanding to other provinces of Spain.

In the days leading up to the event, training sessions on evangelism and prayer were held, bringing together more than 700 people committed to prayer and more than 800 willing to go out and evangelise.

Lumen Fest is planning new evangelism gatherings on dates that are significant to society, led by a team that includes evangelists, young pastors and social media influencers. More about Lumen Fest’s initiatives are being shared on Instagram.
