Wildfires are proving to be the major problem across Europe this summer.

While Spain was experiencing the worst wildfire in its history, which appears to be under control according to emergency services, more than 42,000 hectares were burned in southwestern France.

The fire, active since 22 July, has mainly affected the Gironde and Landes departments, and has caused the evacuation of over 220,000 people. Furethermore, two firefighters died while they were working in Bordeaux.

This Thurday morning, local officials reported a “rather calm" night, and they hope that the situation will improve, due to higher humidity, cooler temperatures and a forecast for rain.

That is why French authorities already allowed 84,000 evacuees to come back home.

CNEF: “Pray and get involved”

The National Council of Evangelicals in France (CNEF) release a statement, calling on Christians to pray for those affected and those working on the ground.

“We pray to our God, convinced that He intervenes in these tragic situations. He can bring His peace to those affected and act miraculously to halt the loss of life and damage to property”, says the evangelical entity.

“Our thoughts are with the 200,000 people displaced, particularly in Gironde. We also think of the firefighters, rescue teams, farmers, law enforcement officers and all those involved in fighting the fires”, they add.

That is why they call on Christians to pray for all of them, that “God may bring them His peace, comfort and hope for a better tomorrow” and, above all, that “everyone may find salvation, hope and comfort through the Gospel”.

For the CNEF, “these major fires remind us how the whole of creation groans and suffers as it awaits its liberation”.

They stress that many Christians “are involved in the fire-fighting efforts, and also share the hope they have in Christ”.

However, the CNEF encourages everybody to “take part in this movement of solidarity, particularly through local churches and organisations working on the ground”.

Chrsitian solidarity

The Assemblies of God in France (ADD) have also called on Christians to pray for the firefighters, those who have lost everything, and the churches in the region.

“The hardest part will no doubt come next: providing moral and spiritual support to those who have lost their homes or possessions”, said a pastor on the ground.

The Momentum evangelical church in Bordeaux, through its charity, Espoir, has collected donations, including blankets, extension leads and food. These donations support the efforts being made by the local authorities.

“A huge thank you to everyone who is giving, serving, praying and getting involved. In these difficult times, every gesture counts and reminds us that together, we are stronger”, pointed out the church on its social media.
