The “Hate Crime 2025” report, recently published by the Austrian ministry of the Interior, shows that there were 6,751 cases of hate crime in Austria in 2025, of which 696 were religion-related.

Only the categories of 'worldview' and 'national or ethnic origin' saw higher numbers of cases recorded by the ministry.

A 29% increase

Muslims were the most targeted group, with 284 cases (38%), followed by Jews, who experienced 247 anti-Semitic acts (35%) and Christians, with 113 incidents (19%).

Furthermore, the 52 offences against other religious communities accounted for 7% of all incidents of religious hostility.

Despite this data, the number of hate attacks against Jews has decreased compared with last year (357), while incidents targeting Christians have increased by 29%.

The most common incidents targeting Christians are property damage (29 offences), followed closely by dangerous threats (24), aggravated theft (13) and assault (11).

Demographics and nationality

The report also analyses the demographics of the suspects. The majority of those who commit anti-Christian attacks are aged between 14 and 18, while offences against Muslims and Jews are predominantly committed by groups aged 25 and over.

Regarding the nationality of the suspects, 57% of those involved in anti-Christian incidents were not Austrian citizens. This figure was 43% for anti-Muslim incidents and 74% of anti-Semitic offences were committed by Austrian citizens.
