Elisabeth Jane Ross, a Scottish evangelical missionary, was found dead inside a suitcase in an abandoned building. in the Kypseli district of Athens, Greece on 18 July, several days after she was reported missing.

The cause of her death remains unknown, and the authorities are carrying out further toxicology tests.

Greek police reported that they have arrested a 26-year-old man, who admitted transporting her body to the abandoned site in a suitcase, but denied killing her.

According to the ongoing investigation, the 38-year-old missionary used to travel to Greece to volunteer with an NGO working with refugees. She had arrived in Athens on June 26 to stay with friends, before she moved to the Kypseli district, where her body was found days later.

"This is an extremely distressing time for the family and it is important that their privacy is respected. Scottish government officials are in communication with the family to ensure they receive appropriate support”, said a Scottish government spokesperson.

"As this remains an operational matter for Police Scotland, it would not be appropriate to comment further", he added.

“Lisa’s life was all about mission”

Peter Anderson, the pastor of City on a Hill church, which Ross attended, points out on a Facebbok video that the her death was “a real tragic loss”.

“It has been a really tough week for our church. She was a member of our church for 20 years, and a very, very precious girl”, he adds.

Anderson stresses that “Lisa’s life was all about mission. She had a big passion for missions. She had been to many places on mission, she served and cared for people all over the world”.
