The Assemblies of God in Ghana are hosting the 10th World Congress of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship (WAGF) from 14 to 16 October in Accra, the country's capital.

It is the first time that this global event, which gathers church leaders and ministers from around the world every three years, has been held in Africa.

This places Africa at the centre of the Assemblies of God's global agenda, in a continent where the Pentecostal movement is experiencing a period of significant growth.

“Divine” timing for Ghana

The President of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, who is a member of an Assemblies of God local church, was among the guests of honour. He gave a welcome speech on the first day of the conference.

Stephen Y. Wengam, leader of the Pentecostal denomination in the country, said that it was 'divine' timing for Ghana to be hosting the event. “Ghana Assemblies of God is very strong”, says Wengam. “Almost 95 years in Ghana, our impact globally on the continent, the relative peace in Ghana, the political stability, the economy is beginning to pick up”, he added.

“Commissioned: One mandate, every nation”

Under the theme Commissioned: One mandate, every nation, the 10th WAGF congress aims to be “a historic global gathering designed to worship, connect, and advance God's Kingdom together”.

“As we gather in Ghana, we come with a renewed passion to see the Church advance beyond its current borders, expand its influence, and be empowered by the Holy Spirit for global impact”, stressed WAGF chairman Dominic Yeo.

WAGF vice president and General Superintendent of Assemblies of God USA, Doug Clay, thanked Wengam for hosting the Congress and “the hard work, planning, logistics, and the many details behind the scenes, which have not gone unnoticed”.

“I am especially grateful for the countless hours of prayer Rev. Wengam and the AG Ghana church family have poured into this gathering. The fruit of those prayers can be seen and felt”, he added.

Plenaries, prayer and revival

Each day of the conference began with a plenary session. Wengam opened the conference on the first day, followed by the WAGF’s general secretary and president of Assemblies of God Spain, Juan Carlos Escobar, on the second day while Doug Clay led the third and last plenary session.

In the mornings, the ‘Upholding the Nations’ sessions focused on different regions of the world each day to learn about their current situation and pray for them.

This was followed by time dedicated to the MM33 project, which aims to reach one million churches by 2033.

Afternoon workshops were available for conference attendees and, each evening, there were revival rallies, a time of “healing and holy fire”, according to the organisers.

The conference will conclude with a special session dedicated to younger generations, led by Joshua D. Mills, followed by a final commissioning service and revival rally conducted by Dominic Yeo.
