Twenty-one arrested in operation against sexual slavery in Barcelona

The criminal organisation exploited about one hundred Nigerian women. Prostitution and Human Trafficking are still major issues in Spain.

The police launched an operation on Monday 16th November to tackle sexual exploitation in the streets of Barcelona.

The regional police in Catalonia (Mossos d’Esquadra) took several public sites in the centre of the city after being a long investigation following Nigerian women who ad been living in conditions of slavery.

21 people have been arrested, 15 men and 6 women.

The criminal organisation, known as “Supreme Eiye Confraternity”, had forced more than one hundred women into prostitution since the beginning of 2014, the Central Unit against Human Traffic explained.

The group was born in university circles in Nigeria in the 90s, and gradually became a feared criminal organisation, El País newspaper informed.

A police spokesman added: “We have taken action against the local branch of this organisation, but also against some international members here”.

Up to 34 people could be brought to the courts, the authorities estimate.
