Several Italian media have confirmed that cinema director Terrence Malick has been filming in Anzio (south of Rome, Italy) for what could become his next film.

According to sources, Malick’s new project has the working title “The Last Planet” and reportedly will include passages of the life of Jesus Christ and representations of parables narrated in the Gospels.

The mayor of Anzio, Candido De Angelis, said the town is “honoured to have been chosen by a director and contemporary artist of the international depth of Terrence Malick”.

The film director is 76 years old and has often used his work to reflect poetically on his own faith. The Christian spirituality appears in many of his films.

One of Malick's major cinematographic successes, “The Tree of Life”, is framed in a long prayer which reflects human struggles that appear in the Old Testament book of Job.

Grace, beauty, creation and the longing to connect with God are some of the themes in Malick’s latest films. His last movie, “A Hidden Life”, won the Cannes Festival Ecumenical Prize and will premier in Europe in December 2019.
