There are over 800 cycle route churches across Germany and Switzerland, which are open to cyclists from Easter to Reformation Day.

Some of the cycle path churches are also open in the winter months.

The cycle route churches are located on popular cycle paths and cycle routes, and offer cyclists parking facilities, a rest area with tables and benches as well as access to toilets and drinking water.

Furthermore, devotions, pastoral care and church tours are also available, as well as information on nearest bike repair shops, how the cycle route continues, and which places of interest are nearby.

EKD leisure and tourism network

If the churches meet all those criteria, the church in Leisure and Tourism network of the mainline Protestant Evangelical Church of Germany (EKD) gives them a signet to put it on the church building.

“It is great when churches strive to be hospitable everywhere and at all times. They will receive special attention for their actions if they are recognised for their joint efforts”, they say in its website.
