Thousands of Christians took to the streets of London on Saturday 23 May, to celebrate the return of the Jesus March to the British capital 25 years later.

The march began near Marble Arch and ended at Trafalgar Square, where participants shared a time of worship, prayer and testimonies.

“London’s church is alive, it is growing, it is diverse. It is a beautiful, wonderful time to be a Christian in London. We want to celebrate that together, and invite others to celebrate that joy as well, to taste and see that the Lord is good”, said Henry George, one of the organisers in an iterview with UK news website Premier Christian News.

Public celebration of Jesus

According to the organisers, Pentecost is “the perfect date” for the march, because it is “the annual celebration of the birth of the church, of the first outpouring of the Holy Spirit and of thousands saved”.

The Jesus March is an opportunity for the church “to publicly celebrate Jesus, heal the spiritual atmosphere in our city, and raise hope and peace in our communities”, they add.

Neither a political act nor a protest

Organisers also stressed that the march “is not a political march”, because “this is not left or right, and no political or national flags are allowed”.

“We are not using this march to speak against any injustices or wrongs regarding the government of the UK, we are celebrating Jesus and lifting him up!”, they explain in the event website.

Sharing the good news

“As Christians, we want to be good news in these places, our job is to be peacemakers”, pointed out Andy Frost, director of Share Jesus International and one of the speakers.

He also stressed the importance of the younger generations, who “are passionate about sharing their faith are stepping into these moments with a real sense of confidence that God is still in the business of transforming and changing lives”.

Girma Bishaw, director of the Gratitude Initiative and also a speaker, underlined that in these kind of events “the church becomes visible. We are not just people doing what we do in our buildings, but actually we care about our nation, our city and the people outside”.

Bishaw, along with others, handed out Bibles in Trafalgar square on the morning of the march, to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the translation of the Bible into English.
