Relationships that drive the mission: the Spanish Missions Platform meets in Barcelona

We met in Barcelona with a simple but ambitious goal: to see that all evangelical churches in Spain have an extensive cross-cultural missionary culture.

Gathering of the Spanish Platform of Missions in Barcelona, June 2025.

The Spanish Mission Platform (which is part of the Spanish Evangelical Alliance) held a working meeting in Barcelona on 27 June. With around 25 attendees, various aspects of collaboration between all those involved in mission in Spain were discussed, with a view to promoting cross-cultural mission in our country and beyond its borders.

The range of initiatives continues to grow, both in local churches and in various organisations throughout the country that want to serve the evangelical community in all the regions of our country. The goal is simple but ambitious: to see that all evangelical churches in Spain have an extensive cross-cultural mission culture!

What is the Spanish Mission Platform? It's like the terrace of the corner café... where we meet friends to ‘fix the world’. We don't meet at your house (my denomination) or at mine (my organisation), but in a public, open, neutral space... And the ‘umbrellas,’ ‘tables,’ and ‘chairs’ are provided by the Spanish Evangelical Alliance. There are no boxes, no bosses, we don't fly anyone's flag...

The goal: the advancement of the kingdom of God and the missio Dei. That's why we are above all a group of friends working together to foster relationships and friendships that drive mission!

Prayer and reflection

After the welcome given by the Platform Coordinator, Carlos Madrigal, the meeting began with an hour of prayer and intercession, led by our sister Zaza Lima from PMI, understanding that seeking the guidance of the Spirit is what really drives mission, above any human effort or strategy; as is well understood from the first New Testament passage in which the church consciously and intentionally addresses cross-cultural mission: Acts 13:1-3.

Our brother Jaume Llenas, of the Lausanne Movement in Spain, led a time of reflection on where we are and where we are going as a Platform. He focused on three basic questions for the eight thematic tables of the Platform: (1) What do you think makes many churches in Spain see mission as something foreign? (2) How could the missionary initiatives that already exist in Spain be made more visible? (3) What could you personally contribute to cross-cultural missions in and from Spain?

Next, the topic of the least reached peoples and diasporas in Spain was addressed. After some powerful testimonies from Zaza Lima about how God revealed Himself through dreams to some of her acquaintances in Tunisia, until they opened their hearts to the Lord, the reflection focused on how to reach the most relevant minority in our country: Muslims.

This minority is respectful of God and, contrary to popular belief, is receptive to the Gospel if we know how to approach them, overcoming prejudices and stereotypes that have no basis in reality.

Projects underway and to be addressed

After lunch, Christian Giordano presented the status of the book on missions in and from Spain (Misiones Made in Spain), which will be published early next year by the Barcelona publishing house Andamio. The chapters, each one more inspiring than the last, present a series of reflections and testimonies of what God is doing in Spain in terms of missions, which will leave no one indifferent. Our gratitude goes to the wide range of authors who have participated in this project!

One of the topics to be developed for the Platform is how to make missions more visible on social media. With the contribution of many practical suggestions made by everyone, it is now time to get to work... And with the participation of Julián Calle from Vigo and Dámaris Acuña from Marín to help with the technical side, the possibilities are exciting.

The meeting closed with a presentation by Jorge Manuel Zúñiga, coordinator of COMIBAM Spain, on the project to hold a meeting at the Iberian Peninsula level in Lisbon with our Portuguese brothers and sisters, on 15 and 16 May 2026, with the participation of COMIBAM Spain and Portugal, FEREDE, the Evangelical Alliances of Spain and Portugal, and the Platform, among others, to continue joining forces from our weakness and vulnerability, which we humbly present to the Lord, who transforms it into strength, to see how our lands are transformed into a powerhouse of missionaries.

In short, it has been an enriching time of unity and friendships that drive the mission forward! We continue with the hope that our passion for missions will take us one step further to see revival in our country.
