Contrary to expectations, New Age practices and other forms of spirituality that were popular in Europe a few decades ago are making a strong comeback.

This trend has also been observed in the United Kingdom, where the country’s Evangelical Alliance (EAUK) has now published a basic guide for Christians that clarifies concepts and provides a biblical foundation for evaluating these alternative forms of spirituality.

“Whether it’s the pub down the road hosting a psychic night, Dua Lipa talking about manifesting her Glastonbury main stage appearance, or Ariana Grande describing herself as ‘a literal witch’, it’s clear we’re living in a time of real spiritual curiosity,” says Katherine Brown, one of the promoters of the booklet Spiritual Curiosity. A Christian guide to understanding the world of crystals, manifesting, tarot and sharing faith in this moment.

According to her, “rather than being fearful as Christians, we should be confident that we have good news and a better story to offer a searching and spiritually open culture, and this resource is a great tool to help build that confidence”.

The aim, say the authors, is “to unpack the cultural moment we are living in, offering a biblical perspective on what we are seeing”. Furthermore, the resource suggests “pastoral and evangelistic responses” and includes “real stories of spiritually curious people who have found Jesus”.

A Europe open to spirituality

The trend across European countries shows a clear rise in interest in spirituality, against a backdrop of falling membership in the so-called ‘national churches’.

A recent survey in Germany showed that almost half of young adults believe in the existence of hell.

In the Netherlands, a recent study shows that whilst Protestant membership is falling, interest in new forms of spirituality is on the rise.

In Spain, the discussion about the Christian faith has been very prominent on social media and in the press, whilst Christians in the art world are also observing a great deal of interest.

At its latest meeting, the European university evangelism movement Feuer concluded that there is a “renewed spiritual openness” on universities across Europe.
