The World Evangelical Alliance Secretary General called for a ceasefire and peace process in Ethiopia in a statement to the United Nations Human Rights Council Special Session on Ethiopia held on 17 December 2021.

“The way to resolve conflict is not through taking up arms”, Thomas Schirrmacher said. “We stand ready to support a peace and reconciliation process, particularly engaging our regional branch, the Association of Evangelicals in Africa (AEA) and our Peace and Reconciliation Network”.

Schirrmacher added: “We appeal to all parties to ensure immediate and unimpeded delivery of the humanitarian aid supplies to the civilians and internally displaced persons, including across the conflict lines”.

The United Nations Human Rights Council is tasked with the promotion and protection of human rights around the world.

The special session was held at the request of the European Union to discuss the impact of the conflict that began in Tigray. Hostilities have recently escalated. There is a serious humanitarian crisis in the region.

During the special session, the Human Rights Council passed a resolution establishing an international commission of human rights experts on Ethiopia.
