The island of Palma de Mallorca is one of the most famous touristic destinations in Europe, which attracts thousands of people every summer.

But not only tourists go to the Spanish island, for more than ten years, young Christians from Germany and Switzerland have organised evangelistic activities with Reach Mallorca. at Ballermann beach.

Between 2 and 11 August, over 300 participants are sharing the gospel near the “Mega Park” on Platja de Palma. Never before has there been such a large group.

Beach and boat services

"We do two evening services on the beach, with worship, with rap, with a short preaching to explain the gospel," says Tim Zimmermann, communications officer for the group that organises this initiative.

Around 150 to 200 passers-by listen to the word of God and also experience street art and music.Participants wear a T-shirt with the name of the event, "Reach Mallorca", so that people can come and talk if they have any doubts or questions about what they have seen or heard.

“We are experiencing a great deal of interest in God and spiritual topics among German visitors to Mallorca, especially in places where you wouldn't expect it”, says Gernot Elsner, co-founder of Reach Mallorca.

Other church services are also held in other tourist-orientated locations on the island.

This year, there is also a party boat with a Christian DJ, where tourists can sail along the beautiful beaches and bays of Cala Rajada free of charge.

A worship service takes place on the boat every day, organised in cooperation with Spanish church communities. “We are delighted that a close partnership has developed with the Spanish over the last two years”, underlines Elsner.

Being light everywhere

There are different initiatives. One is the 'miracle chair', where they invite anyone to sit down and share their need to pray for them.

Another is a mirror where the question "what are you feeling today?" appears and also gives an opportunity to start relevant conversations.

Sometimes it is the simplest things that are best received, for example, simply going around the coast in small groups to talk to people and invite them to evening services on the beach.

Along with six churches in Mallorca, a music and art activity was held in Cala Rajada, in a day of fellowship that brought together about 500 people, with many guests who were able to listen to the gospel.

In Palma, there was also an evangelistic activity with music, children's activities and other creative conversation starters.

Another highlight was the celebration of baptisms on the beach. Seventeen people decided to take a step of faith and commitment to Jesus publicly.

Magaluf with the Street Angels

The participants of Reach Mallorca also collaborate with the ministry of Street Angels, that goes every night to the British party zone in Magaluf, to bring drunken tourists safely to their hotels, administer basic first aid, or counsel about how to find stolen or lost items, among other things.

Many of the tourists in Magaluf, are young peoples, almost teenagers, who come in groups, after finishing secondary school or in the first years of University, to spend a week just partying and drinking.

“We often see drunk men and women becoming victims of theft or sexual harassment during our work”, points out Elsner.

From 03:00 until 07:00 every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday morning, they hit the streets, always “working closely with door staff, police, and local traders to keep an eye on things and make sure that everyone is having fun in a safe and responsible manner”, they explain.
