Masters champion: ‘I play golf because I am trying to glorify God’
US Christian golfer Scottie Scheffler won the 2022 Masters. “My identity is not a golf score. God is in control, He is leading me”, he says after his victory.

The 25-year-old US Christian golfer Scottie Scheffler recently won the prestigious Masters Tournament.
Scheffler, who became the number one golfer in the world on March 27 after winning three of five events, finished three strokes ahead of Rory McIlroy and received his first green jacket.

“My identity is not a golf score”
“The reason why I play golf is I am trying to glorify God and all that He has done in my life, so for me, my identity is not a golf score”, said Scheffler in the press conference after his victory.
He shared with the reporters that his wife Meredith “told me this morning: ‘If you win this golf tournament today, if you lose this golf tournament by 10 shots, if you never win another golf tournament again, I’m still going to love you, you are still going to be the same person, Jesus loves you and nothing changes’”
“All I am trying to do is glorify God and that is why I am here and that is why I am in this position”, adds the Masters champion.
Scheffler pointed out that he and his wife “always pray for peace because that is what I want to feel on the golf course, is peace and have fun and just feel His presence. So that is our prayer and I really felt that today. I felt at peace”.
“What we talked about is that God is in control and that the Lord is leading me; and if today is my time, it’s my time. And if I shot 82 today, somehow I was going to use it for His glory”, he stressed.
A Christian caddie
In addition to his wife, the other great supporter is his caddie,Ted Scott. They teamed up for the first time at the RSM Classic in November, after Scott broke up with Bubba Watson, who he had worked with for nearly 15 years and won The Masters in 2012 and 2014.
Scheffler and Scott met in a bible study held by professional golfers on tour , a year before they joined forces on the PGA Tour. And “he called me up and said, ‘I really want to work with a Christian. Tha is how I try to live my life’”, recalled Scott after the victory.
Scott is also very outspoken about his faith. In an interview with Sports Spectrum Podcast in 2018, he said: "People a lot of times think if you become a Christian, God’s just gonna make everything easy for you, and that’s not the case, but having the God of the universe on your side just makes things easier to deal with".
