In March 2025, the Protestant Federation of France (FPF) and its Youth Commission conducted a national survey of young people involved in Protestant churches.

The aim of this initiative was to gain a better understanding of their expectations, needs and spiritual practices, in order to inform the actions and statements of those who support them on a daily basis.

A total of 302 young people responded to the survey. Aged between 18 and 35, their responses reveal a living and structured faith, rooted in regular practices.

67% of these young Protestants in France say they engage in a weekly spiritual activity, whether it be prayer, Bible reading or participation in a local group.

The Bible appears to be the primary source of spiritual information. It is cited by 77% of young people, ahead of discussion groups (54%) and digital content such as podcasts and videos (42%).

This multiple use of communication tools reflects a desire to better understand, but also to live a faith that is embodied in everyday life.

For these young Protestants, faith is not just a private conviction. It is seen as a personal and public commitment, a path of transformation and responsibility. They readily mention the importance of theological debate and regular Bible reading as essential foundations of their spiritual life.

Despite the challenges, 80% of young people surveyed say they are optimistic about the future. This is a particularly striking figure, bucking the general trend among young people in France (58% of 15-30 year olds nationally). This hope is nourished by their faith, but also by a strong need for connection, community and concrete commitment, say the authors of the FPF study.

The obstacles they encounter are “clearly identified”. Lack of time comes out on top, ahead of tensions between certain Christian values and contemporary societal norms. “This disconnect sometimes creates a form of spiritual loneliness, but it also strengthens the desire to anchor themselves in spaces for dialogue and teaching that are adapted to their reality”.

Finally, the relationship of young Protestants in France with spirituality is defined as “deeply personal, embodied and evolving”, the authors of the study conclude. The young people interviewed describe a continuous connection with God, but also active listening to others and to themselves.

The Protestant Federation of France includes churches that are theologically evangelical, but also others that are not.
