Angel Studios, the studio behind the film Sound of Freedom and The Chosen series, has announced the acquisition of the rights to the film Bonhoeffer (originally God's Spy).

The film, now in production stage, tells the story of the pastor and resistance fighter Dietrich Bonhoeffer, one of the most prominent German theologians of the 20th century, who, according to Angel Studios, “was determined to live his life with uncompromising political and spiritual courage while choosing to live in Berlin during the Third Reich”.

It is written and directed by Todd Komarnicki (author, among others, of Sully with Tom Hanks, and Elf).

The main character, Protesant pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer, is played by Jonas Dassler (The Golden Glove, Never Look Away), his father Karl Bonhoeffer by German actor Moritz Bleibtreu (Run Lola Run), while August Diehl (Inglorious Bastards, The king’s man) plays the German Protestant theologian Martin Niemöller, who was imprisoned in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp.

Producers included Emmanuel and Camille Kampouris; Ralph Winter (X-Men); Mark O’Sullivan and Chloe Kassis-Crowe through the Ireland-based Crow’s Nest Productions; and Jean Jaques Neira for Fontana in Belgium.

Bonhoeffer is due to be released in cinemas in November 2024.

“Dietrich’s message is as urgent in 2023 as it was in 1945”

“Conspiring to bring an end to the Nazi regime, Bonhoeffer fearlessly spoke the truth while facing unyielding oppression and evil. His impact is still felt around the world today”, the studio says.

For Jordan Harmon, president of Angel Studios, “there has never been a time in history where we needed to be reminded of the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer more than today”.

Komarnicki agrees that “Dietrich’s message of peace and courage is as urgent in 2023 as it was in 1945”, and told American magazine Deadline that “encountering Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and being honored with the opportunity to share his thrilling story with the world, has been a singular privilege”.
