This October 2024, the Observatory of Religious Pluralism in Spain offered new figures on places of worship in the country.

According to this official entity, evangelical Christians continue to be the minority faith group in Spain with the largest number of places of worship. In general terms, only the Roman Catholic Church has more temples.

In 2024, there are 4,455 places of worship of evangelical churches, compared to 4,359 in 2023. In other words, there are now 96 evangelical church buildings more than last year.

Only evangelicals and Muslims experience significant growth

Other faith groups retain their presence or suffer losses, in a general context in which atheists and agnostics are on the rise.

Currently, this is the sum of the registered worship places of each denomination in Spain (excluding evangelicals): 22,933 are Roman Catholic, 1,839 are Muslim, 633 are from Jehovah’s Witnesses, 236 are Orthodox, 187 are Buddhists, 154 are Adventists, 114 are Mormons, 106 are Baha'is, 68 are Anglicans, 46 are Jews, 37 are Gnostics, 33 belong to other religions, 30 are Hindus, 27 are Sikhs, 14 are from Scientology and 5 belong to the known as Christian Science.

In total, there are 30,949 places of worship in Spain, and 1 in 4 belong to a denomination other than Catholicism.

By regions

If we focus on this 8,016 places of worship that are different from the predominant Church in Spain today, the Observatory shows that most of them are located in the Autonomous Communities of Catalonia (1,599), Andalusia (1,276) and the Community of Madrid (1,142). In turn, the distribution by provinces is led by Madrid (1,599), followed by Barcelona (1,127) and Valencia (430).

The Observatory of Religious Pluralism in Spain also offers a list of the municipalities with the most places of worship in relation to their population, divided into three sections: with less than 50,000 inhabitants, headed by Vic in Barcelona (25); with 50,000 to 100,000 residents, in which Ceuta is in first position (74); and finally, with more than 100,000 residents, led by the city of Madrid (587).
