An evangelical church was completely destroyed during a new fire that took place at dawn in the province of Arauco, in the Chilean region of Bío Bío.

According to people living nearby, shots were fired and an explosion was heard before the fire. The governor of Arauco, Óscar Muñoz, confirmed the total burning of the Evangelical Army Mission church of Cañete.

The Chilean police reported that neighbours of the church said they saw a group of unknown people fleeing in a van after the attack.

Firefighters from the fifth company of Antiquina went to control the flames, but the church was already destroyed. So far this year, four churches have already been burned in the area.

The president of the Regional Coordination of Evangelical Churches, Héctor Luengo, lamented the incident and said they “condemn any kind of violence against the evangelical church. This is already a persecution, because there have been more than 60 churches burned in two years. We are very worried”.

“This rural church was not more than a year old, because it was inaugurated at the beginning of the pandemic, and it is a place where social help is given to all those who need it”, added Muñoz.
